Station 16 Gallery is thrilled to present Toronto artists, Peter Andrew and Derek Blais, in their first Montreal exhibition, Point Blank. Internationally recognized for its captivating photography, Point Blank is an ongoing project depicting handguns in profound detail. Photographing 100 guns in total, Point Blank examines the aesthetic value of the lethal weapons head-on. The high-resolution, frontal portraits display every fiber and scratch of the gun, creating a startling, yet stunning, portrayal.
“We’ve always been fascinated by pistols and what they represent: ultimate power and personal protection," describes the artists. "We decided to photograph them as you might photograph a powerful person. As we started shooting them, we could see flaws in their design. These imperfections interested us, connecting us back to these images as ‘portraits.’ We want people to look closely and examine the flaws and imperfections of something so powerful, so dangerous.”
The photographs are not intended as a political statement, despite providing a forum for conversation. Rather, they study the technical and scientific elements of guns, highlighting the underlying beauty in their design. The precise details displayed in the oversized format allow the viewer to examine the gun’s intricacies, while also revealing its imperfections. The wear and tear of the weapon indicates that it has been previously used, raising the question of the background of the particular gun. An subtle undertone, the photographs suggest a greater story behind the gun, just as a portrait would do.
Andrew and Blais achieve such detail by taking 20-40 frames of each gun, which are then combined to produce the final image. Although the goal of photographing 100 guns is still in progress, the exhibition will feature a variety of handguns, including Smith & Wesson .38, Sig Sauer, Glock, Smith & Wesson 9mm, .357, and UZI.

Reconnue sur le plan international pour sa photographie captivante, Point Blank est un projet en cours représentant les pistolets en profondeur. En photographiant 100 armes au total, Point Blank examine de front la valeur esthétique des armes meurtrières. Sa haute résolution, ses portraits frontaux exposent toutes les fibres et éraflures de l'arme, créant une étonnante, mais très belle, représentation.
"Nous avons toujours été fascinés par les pistolets et ce qu'ils représentent : le pouvoir ultime et la protection individuelle. Nous avons décidé de les photographier tout comme nous pouvons photographier une personne puissante. Quand nous avons commencé à les photographier, nous pouvions voir des failles dans leur conception. Ces imperfections nous intéressaient, nous reliant à ces images comme étant des ‘portraits.’ Nous voulons que les gens regardent de près en examinant les défauts et imperfections de quelque chose de si puissant, si dangereux. "
Ces photographies ne sont pas conçues comme étant une déclaration politique, en dépit de fournir un forum de conversation. Ils étudient plutôt les éléments techniques et scientifiques des armes, soulignant leur beauté sous-jacente de leur conception.
